Thinking about Luna Blue this week while working on the Blue Moon Farm catalog also got me thinking about the Magic Bullet Fund, listed on our Links page.
My sister Jean and her husband Leo learned about the Magic Bullet Fund after Luna lost her fight with osteosarcoma. They’ve made it a mission to get as many people involved with this great organization as they can. They know all too well how the diagnosis of cancer in a pet sends your world into a complete tailspin, both emotionally and financially.
Although Luna’s ordeal was Jean and Leo’s first experience with canine cancer, it wasn’t mine. I worked in a local veterinary hospital for 8 years, and had way too much experience with just how devastating the diagnosis of cancer in a beloved furry family member can be for those who love them. It’s devastating for those who take care of them as well.
The costs of cancer treatment vary from hundreds up to thousands of dollars, and it is a heartwrenching time for families who dearly love their pet, but simply cannot afford the costs involved in treatment. So many times the staff of the hospital would talk about the need for some sort of fund to help people and pets in that circumstance. That is where the Magic Bullet Fund comes in!
The Magic Bullet fund was set up by Laurie Kaplan, MSC, author of a fabulous book entitled Helping Your Dog Fight Cancer. What every caretaker should know about canine cancer, and also the owner, companion, and friend of Bullet until his death in 2004.
Here is a quote from the Magic Bullet Fund’s mission statement:
Canine cancer treatment requires a substantial outlay of financial resources, ranging on average between $600 and $6,000 per dog. Many dog owners cannot support such a large unanticipated outlay.
To offer help to such individuals and their dogs, The Magic Bullet Fund provides financial assistance to pay for canine cancer treatments and medicines when the owners cannot.
With our financial sponsorship, the canines we serve receive state-of-the-art veterinary cancer support for their conditions. The Fund’s mission is to provide cancer treatment for dogs whose caretakers are unable to provide treatment; dogs who would not have cancer treatment at all without our assistance.

Donate, volunteer, there are lots of options. Even just spreading the word to other pet lovers will help! Thanks!
