This is a blog I wrote over a year ago, but I felt that I need to re-post it because I have been receiving calls from potential clients who have had bad experiences when doing a boudoir session with another photographer in the past.  I told them that these are the things that they should ask right up front.  I know that this isn’t positively going to make sure that the photographer is the right one, but it will help with the short  list.  I’ve sent them this list of questions to help them get started.

I received a call from a potential client back a while ago and I was actually very delighted that she had such a good list of questions for me before she would hire a photographer – especially one that was going to take intimate photos for her. She had done her homework and said that she wanted to be sure she was dealing with a professional and a real business. Here are some of the questions she asked and the answers I gave her.

1. Do you have a business license? (yes – in Sandy Springs where my studio is)
2. Are you a corporation and in which state? (yes – Mark L. Anderson, LLC – Georgia – DBA Casual Elegance Photography®)
3. Do you have insurance? (yes – liability and loss of property)
4. When did you start the business? (2000 – I have been specializing in Boudoir and Intimate photography since 2001. I don’t shoot weddings and have not just added Boudoir photography to my menu of services.  I take the business of Boudoir and Intimate Photography seriously and professionally.)
5. Do you have a Website? – she was referred by a friend (yes – casualelegancephotography.com and my email address is mark@casualelegancephotography.com)
6. Do you have a studio? Can I meet with you ahead of the shoot and see your studio? (yes I have a 15oo sq ft studio in a small quite business park – I encourage that you come in ahead of time to discuss a shoot.  It’s always a good idea to see if you click with someone.  You can see examples of my work and we can go over ideas.)
7. Do you have a Makeup Artist? (yes – I utilize the services of several in the area but work closely with 3 – all licensed estheticians. They all believe in cleanliness and ensure their equipment and products are cleaned between uses. These Makeup Artists and I have worked together for over 10 years.)
8. Can I bring someone to the shoot with me? (YES – I highly encourage you to do that)
9. Will my photos be sold or used by you? ( NO! I do not use client images. If a client wants me to use an image I require them to sign an agreement for me to do so. I don’t even allow anyone other than the client to order prints or a CD)

Another few questions that should also be asked are:

1.  What forms of payment do you accept? (I accept most major credit cards, checks, and cash)

2.  Do you provide Prints or just photos on a CD?  (I can provide either or both.  I can also provide books, calendars, and canvas prints.)

3.  What are your hours of operation?  (I’m by appointment only and have appointment hours 7 days per week and on holidays)

She had a bunch more questions but they were related to the process, the shoot, and the timing. As I said, I was delighted that she was taking the task of hiring a photographer so seriously and I gladly answered her questions. It made me very happy that I had followed all the right steps to build my business correctly, and that Casual Elegance Photography® had all the right answers.

Great shoot yesterday with a client who just turned 62.

Boudoir photography is not just for the young and for those with “perfect” bodies. We all bring something special to a shoot. I love to work with the natural beauty each of us has and it’s a great feeling when you capture images that make us all go “wow”!!!! The older I get the more I appreciate the relaxed nature of my clients who entrust me to get the images they can love over time. I really like to sit and talk a few minutes before the shoot and talk about “the world.” As the shoot progresses we normally get a chance to laugh and talk about all sorts of things. I Love My Job!!!

At Casual Elegance Photography ® it’s all about capturing the beauty in all of us. As I mentioned, we talk and joke and laugh. Some clients have described the experience as having fun with friends and getting the benefit of great shots at the same time. And it doesn’t matter if you are in your 20s or in your 60s, when you come to Casual Elegance Photography ® you will see how beautiful you are and have some fun at the same time.

I’d like to dispel some myths many people have about boudoir and nude photography.

  1. Boudoir does not necessarily mean nude. You can wear clothing or lingerie, or you can be nude. It’s up to you.
  2. Boudoir does not mean Porn. Boudoir is a romantic, sensual, and sexy type of photography but it’s not porn. The images capture the essence of beauty and femininity – soft and romantic – sexy and playful – classy and classic.
  3. Nude does not mean Porn. Tasteful artistic and even glamour nude can be a beautiful expression of sensuality and is not porn.
  4. Boudoir photography can be simple or complex in nature. It’s up to you and your personal preferences.
  5. Did I mention that Boudoir, Art Nude, and Glamour Nude are not Porn?

At Casual Elegance Photography we believe that the human form is a beautiful piece of art in itself. Whether clothed or nude, we capture sensual, sexy, and romantic images that express the beauty that’s you.  We try to make the images classy yet sexy, while bringing out  the real you.   We’ve been shooting Boudoir images for many years and have the professionalism and experience to capture the images that you want in a way that you will love them.   We strive to provide you with a wonderful experience that you will have fond memories of forever.   Our goal is to exceed your expectations while making your comfort our focus.

Where has the time gone? It feels like Memorial Day was just the other week.

I did a head shot shoot today with a new model. One of the reasons I keep my prices low on head shots is because I went it to be affordable for a model, actor, or anyone that is just starting out. I believe that it’s hard enough to start in the business and that in today’s economy people just don’t have the big bucks to spend to get quality headshots. So my pricing takes that into account. Besides, I actually enjoy doing head shots. It gives me a chance to meet new talent and for them to learn a thing or two about working with a photographer. I always advise them to get an agent before they spend lots of money on a portfolio because the ultimate decision about the model/actor’s venue will be by the agent. And if the portfolio doesn’t match their ideas, it will be a waste of money. I’m sure that I lose business by not selling a portfolio package, but I feel better knowing that I am being honest about it.

Next week will be a crazy one. I have a few personal things happening so I’ve got to plan any business related things carefully. I’m getting a Blue Light (PDT) treatment on my entire head to try to get rid of some cancer, so that will tie up an entire day and maybe a little of the next day if I’m still sore. But at least I will be doing what I can to get rid of this stuff. 🙂

If you need head shots please give me a call. You can’t beat the price for the quality of images that you will receive! Visit Casual Elegance Photography ® to see samples of my work and read the client testimonials.

I read an article today that discussed one photographer’s view of Boudoir Photography. Their opinion is that Boudoir should NEVER contain any nudity and that it should only be slightly suggestive. The photographer went on to say that they specialized in Boudoir but they do not shoot any nudity. Unfortunately I don’t totally agree with the photographer because it’s my opinion that the client makes the decision as to what Boudoir is or isn’t to them. If a client wants nudity in the images it’s their decision. They know the person who the images are for much better than the photographer taking them. Even if the images are for no one but them self, they know what they want and how they want to the photos taken. At Casual Elegance Photography, I encourage my clients to share their thoughts and ideas so that I can get the images they want. Many bring in images that they have seen and liked so that we can work on something similar. It’s a good way to “see” inside their head. We usually get all the images that the client wanted to get and then a few more. By shooting directly to the computer and being able to see each shot on a 19″ monitor as we shoot, it makes the session a bit more interactive and helps both the client and me to know if we got the shot or not.
